Leading developer of next-generation semiconductor memory technology Weebit Nano (ASX:WBT) reports it has taped-out demonstration chips that have integrated its embedded Resistive Random-Access Memory (ReRAM) module in an advanced 22nm FD-SOl process technology.
The creation of these demonstration chips represent the first tape-out of the company’s ReRAM technology in a 22nm form, which is one of the industry’s most common process nodes, and a geometry where embedded flash is not viable.
It is reported that the company accomplished this feat with its development partners CEA-Leti and CEA-list, which designed a full IP memory module that integrates a multi-megabit ReRAM block targeting the 22nm FD-SOl process.
This process is designed to deliver ‘outstanding’ performance for connected and ultra-low power applications such as Internet of Things (IoT) and edge Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The company also notes that due to the fact that embedded flash is unable to scale below 28nm, new Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) technology is needed for smaller process geometrics.
In addition, it is reported that the Weebit ReRAM in 22nm FD-SOl solves this problem by offering a low-power, cost-effective embedded NVM solution that can withstand harsh environmental conditions.
“We are continuing to accelerate Weebit’s path towards more advanced geometries to meet a clear market need in applications such as microcontrollers, IoT, 5G, edge AI and automotive”
Speaking on the demonstration chips, Weebit Nano Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Coby Hannoch said: “We’re delighted to have taped-out on schedule our first demo chip in 22nm. We are continuing to accelerate Weebit’s path towards more advanced geometries to meet a clear market need in applications such as microcontrollers, IoT, 5G, edge AI and automotive.
Embedded NVM is a key element of such designs, but since embedded flash is difficult to scale below 28nm, many companies are looking to emerging technologies like ReRAM. There is increased interest from companies looking to use our ReRAM to create exciting new products in these areas.”
Weebit Nano is a leading developer of next-generation semiconductor memory technology. The company’s ReRAM technology delivers the solution to the growing need for ‘significantly’ higher performance and lower power memory solutions in a range of new electronic products, such as IoT devices, smartphones, robotics, autonomous vehicles, 5G communications and AI.
